IPL Hair Removal FAQs
What is IPL?
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a more modern and gentle form of permanent/long-term body and facial hair removal technology that competes directly with laser hair removal. IPL is rapidly growing in popularity as it is safe and effective for home use and sidesteps the potential harm of lasers.
IPL hair reduction uses intense flashes of broad-spectrum light to heat the melanin in the hair shafts during their anagen (growth) phase. The heat travels down to the hair follicle, permanently or semi-permanently harming the follicle and reducing hair growth. Over time, as more and more follicles are disabled, you will notice a dramatic reduction in visible hair growth.
How is IPL different from laser hair removal?
IPL and laser differ in the types of light they emit. Laser hair removal devices generate a focused, high-energy laser beam aimed directly at the hair root, penetrating the skin and damaging the follicle. While it is effective, lasers’ high-energy beams may cause discomfort and are generally only suited for salon use and not to be used frequently.
IPL devices work by flashing larger areas of skin and body hair with scattered, broad-spectrum light. Instead of targeting a single follicle, IPL treats a larger area with rapid bursts of broad-spectrum light, heating the melanin in the hair shafts to disrupt hair growth. IPL is safe for regular home use.
Can anyone use IPL?
IPL hair removal is not suited for individuals with dark skin or light hair. Darker or more pigmented skin may absorb a higher percentage of the emitted light, leading to discomfort. Individuals with very light or blonde body hair may not see the results they desire as the hair follicles reflect light energy away instead of absorbing it to harm the follicle.
