IPL Hair Removal FAQs
What is IPL
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) is a modern hair removal technology used for permanent / long-term body and facial hair removal. It is the spiritual successor to laser hair removal that offers all of the same hair reduction benefits while being safe for personal or at-home use.
IPL hair removal uses an intense flash lamp to emit scattered wavelengths of light that harm body hair follicles in their anagen (growth) phase. This either permanently or semi-permanently disables the follicles, gradually thinning out body hair.
What is the difference between IPL and laser hair removal?
Essentially, the only difference is the type of light they emit. IPL produces broad-spectrum wavelength pulses that cover a relatively large section of skin at a time. With each pulse, the melanin in the hair shafts heats up, overheating the follicle and reducing hair growth.
Laser hair removal devices, on the other hand, produce an intense and hyperfocused beam of light aimed directly at the follicle. The laser beam penetrates the skin, harming the follicle and reducing hair growth.
While they both produce similar results, IPL, the newer of the two body hair management techniques, is safer for personal and at-home use. Laser devices are typically high-powered and reserved for salon use, and even lower-powered home laser devices may cause significant burns and skin damage if used incorrectly.
For commercial reasons, many home hair reduction devices labelled as ‘Laser Devices’ actually rely on IPL technology.
How to get the best IPL hair reduction results
Home IPL devices like the Bondi Body V2 Laser @ Home are easy and intuitive to use. It requires no special training, and if following our guide below, even first-timers should be able to safely and effectively manage their body hair at home.
Prepare your skin and body hair
IPL hair removal works best on stubble no more than 5mm in length. We recommend shaving the area, give or take 24 hours in advance, to ensure the right length of hair. DO NOT epilate, wax, or use depilatory creams before using IPL. Avoid tanning or excessive sun exposure before and after IPL treatment.
Ensure that your skin is completely clean and dry before starting. Do not moisturise or use fake tan, deodorant, perfume, or body oils before your IPL session.
Using the device
Please wear the included safety glasses when using your IPL device. The Bondi Body V2 Laser @ Home IPL hair removal device features 8 power settings and a manual and automatic mode. The automatic mode senses your skin and hair tone and automatically adjusts the power output for optimal results—we recommend using this mode and evaluating the results before using manual mode. If using manual mode, we recommend starting at a low setting of 2 or 3 and evaluating the results before increasing the power.
Post-IPL treatment skincare
After your IPL session, avoid taking very hot showers or baths for the next three days and only use non-scented moisturisers. It’s also recommended to avoid strong UV light, including direct sunlight and sunbeds. Do not shave for 48 hours after IPL treatment.
The skin may show slight redness and/or prickle, tingle, or feel warm post-treatment. This reaction is normal and will subside. You can cool the area with an ice pack, a cold, wet cloth, or cool running water.
Is IPL hair removal safe?
There have been extensive worldwide studies that demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of IPL for hair removal. IPL hair removal is rapidly growing in popularity, both in salons and at home.
Bondi Laser @ Home meets all small appliance CE regulations.
Does IPL hurt?
No, it does not. Some users report a slight tingling around the upper lip and intimate areas; however, the experience is painless.
Do I need eye protection when using an IPL device?
Yes, but don’t worry: we’ve got you covered. Every box includes a stylish pair of protective glasses.
How often should I use IPL for effective hair removal?
Please check the manufacturer’s recommendations. IPL devices vary in power output, and different skin and hair types may require more or less frequent use.
Bondi Body V2 Laser @ Home
Face, neck, and intimate areas (Bikini Line, Brazilian, Hollywood): Up to once a week for 12 weeks.
Legs, arms, underarms, stomach, chest, and back: Up to twice a week for 12 weeks.

—
Do not use IPL around the eyes, even if wearing protective glasses.
Men, avoid using IPL on the face as it may cause problems down the line.
Does IPL hair reduction work on sensitive skin?
Bondi Laser is perfect for the most sensitive of skin types. With 8 different intensity settings, you can adjust the light strength to suit your skin and hair type.
Many women with polycystic ovarian syndrome use the Bondi Laser.
Does IPL hair removal work on all skin and hair types?
IPL hair reduction does not work equally well on all skin and hair tones. Please consult the chart below before purchasing.
Skin: Skin with dark pigmentation can absorb more than the safe amount of light, which may lead to discomfort. IPL hair reduction treatment (at home or in a clinic) will NOT work on black or mixed-race skin tones.
Hair: Lighter hair colours may not pick up the light, making the treatment ineffective. IPL hair reduction treatment (at home or in a clinic) NOT work on blonde, red, or grey hair.

Is IPL suitable for men?
Definitely! Bondi Laser handsets are suitable for both men and women 16 years and older.
Men, avoid using any IPL device on the face as it may cause irregular facial hair growth in the future. It’s safe to use everywhere else on the body.
Can I use IPL when pregnant or breastfeeding?
Although there is no evidence showing that IPL has negative effects on pregnant or breastfeeding women, we still don’t recommend using our Bondi Laser IPL handset as a precaution.
Can I use IPL over freckles or moles?
Bondi Laser is safe to use over freckles and non-raised moles. Always speak to your doctor if you notice a new mole or change to an existing mole, a mole with an irregular shape, or a mole with more than 1 colour.
Can I use IPL over tattoos?
You should not use IPL over tattoos. The light energy will be more attracted to the pigments in the skin, rather than the melanin in the hair which can cause a reaction in the skin and blistering. You should always go around your tattoos.
Can I use IPL before or after tanning?
If you have recently been sun tanning, we recommend waiting 2 weeks before using your handset. You should wait 48 hours to tan after using your handset.
The same rule applies for sunbeds. We advise removing all artificial tan before using our handsets, as the light energy may be more attracted to the pigments in the skin, rather than the melanin in the hair. You can reapply the tan once the skin has relaxed.
Is it normal for there to be a slight burning smell?
Yes, this is completely normal. As the light energy is heating the hair, you may smell a slight burning. This just means there may be some hairs that have not been shaved.
Please ensure that you have prepped the skin correctly and that the skin is completely shaved before starting your session.
Do I need to shave before using the Bondi Body V2 Laser @ Home?
You can use the device before you shave or after you shave. The key is making sure the hair in the area you are treating is between 1mm and 5mm (less than half a centimetre) in length.
If yours is at the required length you can use the device straight away. The hair follicle does need to be intact for IPL to be effective. This means NO waxing, plucking, threading, epilating, etc.
When will I see IPL results?
Results vary from person to person; however, noticeable hair reduction typically starts after around 4 treatments.
What should I do if I don’t see the results I expected?
Due to variations in skin and hair types, IPL users might not see the results they expect until they’ve tweaked the device setting to find the exact right power output or changed the way they prepare their skin.
If you’re not seeing the desired results, try taking the following steps:
- Use the automatic option.
- Increase the intensity setting.
- Ensure that your skin is clean, dry, and free from any creams, makeup, or deodorant.
- Make sure the device is pressed firmly to the skin.
- Move the device slowly along the area, 1cm by 1cm.
- Make sure the device stays in contact with the skin.
- Ensure that the hair is between 1mm and 5mm in length before using the device.
Can I use the Bondi Body V2 Laser @ Home IPL device on my face?
Women – Yes, you can use the device on the face; the upper lip, cheeks, sideburns, jawline, neck, and chin.
Always wear protective glasses when using the device.
WE STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU DO NOT USE THE DEVICE AROUND THE EYES.
Men – Do NOT use the device around the eyes or the face. IPL may cause irregular facial hair growth down the line.
Who should NOT use IPL?
Do NOT use any IPL hair reduction device if you:
- are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- have any active implants.
- are under the age of 16.
- have taken the following medications in the last 90 days:
- Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs)
- Beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs)
- Azelaic Acid
- Immunosuppressive Medications - have had surgery in the treatment area in the past 90 days.
- have received radiation or chemotherapy within the past 12 months.
- have been diagnosed with:
- Diabetes
- Metabolic diseases
- Epilepsy
- Vitiligo
- Congestive heart disease
- Immunosuppressive disorders
- Vascular or Bleeding disorders
- Skin cancer or other types of localised cancers
Do NOT use IPL on the following skin conditions:
- Infections, lacerations, burns, abrasions, lesions, or haematomas.
- Eczema, follicle inflammation, or herpes simplex.
- Sunburn, a recent tan or fake-tanned skin, tattoos, or permanent makeup.
- Warts, dark veins, scars, and skin anomalies.
Can I use IPL if I have psoriasis?
This really depends on the severity of your psoriasis. For mild forms of this condition, it is safe to use IPL, provided the skin in your treatment area is healthy.
When performing IPL, you are using high levels of heat on the skin. IPL uses a combination of light and heat to target and disable hair follicles. For this reason, we need the skin in the surrounding areas to be strong enough to tolerate this heat. If your skin is weakened, the heat may cause an adverse reaction.
Do not use IPL if you are taking oral medication for psoriasis. If you use topical steroid creams, you will need to wait 4 weeks after you have stopped using these before using IPL.
If you suffer from flare-ups in certain areas, we recommend that you consult with your dermatologist before using IPL hair removal devices.
